Now that you've bought your Raleigh, North Carolina home, your work isn't finished. Houses need a lot of maintaining, more than time share real estate in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico or a condominium with a communal repairs scheme. It isn't fun and it is time consuming, but maintaining your house is extremely important. If you don't your home could actually become a health hazard for you and your family. Here are some things to watch out for when you start your spring cleaning.
Air Exchange System
Many people view their air exchange system as an install-and-forget expense, but an improperly maintained air exchanger can actually be spreading bacteria and spoors throughout your home. Therefore you should read the manufacturer's instructions and make sure you change the filters on your air exchanger as often as suggested in the instructions. This prevents mold and bacteria from building up in the trapped materials and keeps your house competitive among Edmonton homes for sale.
Heating System
Even more important than your air exchanger is your heater. Heaters can be gas, oil, or electric, and each one poses its dangers. The first is it cutting out on you during the winter months. As you remember your Mississauga real estate broker saying, this could lead to frozen pipes and even frozen people! Therefore, have it looked at once a year. If your heater is gas fired, check it regularly for leaks that could cause an explosion, and if it's oil fired keep a functioning carbon monoxide detector around - this colorless, odorless gas can leak from a malfunctioning furnace and kill you in your sleep.
Moisture
Most people don't see a little bit of water as a problem that needs industrial water treatment chemicals thrown at it, but a little water can turn into a lot. An ignored leak in the roof can collapse bedroom ceilings. A tolerated dampness in the basement can turn into a flood during rainy springs. And then there's the mold. Mold loves dark, wet environments, so if you allow moisture to build up you're fostering it. Some mold merely irritates those with allergies, while other types can make people very sick.
Poisons
Homes are inspected before sale for the presence of radon, asbestos, and lead products these days, but more poisons can be present than just those banned by the EPA. Rat and mouse poison left out for vermin can inadvertently kill household pets and small children. Other pesticides used on lawns and in homes can cause illness in people and pets if not properly cleaned up. Antifreeze is another common killer - its bright colors and sweet taste have been known to induce pets and children to poison themselves.
